2024 US Open
The US Open, which takes place at the end of the summer, denotes the final Grand Slam event of the season, and we have got all the details so you are fully clued up.
When is the US Open Tennis?
The US Open will be staged at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, also known as Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York. The centrepiece of the complex is the Arthur Ashe Stadium which can seat over 23,000 spectators, and this major tennis tournament has been staged there since 1978.
This year, the first round gets underway on 26th August, and it ends on September 8th. With electrifying night sessions, the top players will want to take a bite out of the Big Apple.
Who is Playing in the US Open 2024?
All the biggest stars in the men’s US Open game in 2024 will descend upon Flushing Meadows for this event, and players who qualify automatically will achieve this through their ATP rankings. World No.1 Jannik Sinner is joined on the entry list by Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alexander Zverev, while Rafael Nadal has been given a protected ranking following a spate of injuries, and this could be the Spaniard’s last appearance in New York.
On the women’s US Open side for 2024 , former US Open champions Sloane Stephens, and Emma Radacanu who recently returned to the world’s top 100, have secured direct entry to the tournament.
The US has a strong contingent with 15 women and 10 men sealing their spots, and this includes Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, Taylor Fritz, and Tommy Paul, who are ranked inside the world’s top 15.
Meanwhile, there are 16 places up for grabs that are available via qualifying. For players to come through qualifying, they must win three matches, and for the men’s tournament, these will be best-of-three-sets matches as opposed to the usual best-of-five-sets adopted for all Grand Slams.
Format and Schedule of the US Open
Spanning over a fortnight, the format for the women’s is best-of-three sets, while the women’s is best-of-five sets. Each draw starts with 128 players and this will be whittled down to the final two following a series of knockout matches. We have circled the key dates for you to be aware of:
August 26 - Start of men’s and women’s singles first round
August 27 - Men’s and women’s singles second round
September 1 - Men’s and women’s Round of 16 ties begins
September 3 - Men’s and women’s quarter-final clashes commence
September 5 - Women’s semi-finals day

September 8 - Men’s Final
How to Bet on Tennis and Odds Explained
Tennis opens itself up to a world of bets, and at Stake, we offer competitive odds across a wide range of markets for bettors to feast on at the US Open. Typically, the odds will reflect the chances or probability of an event occurring, and prices will be displayed in a mixture of formats, including American odds, where the favourite will be denoted with a minus (-) sign and the underdog will have a positive (+) sign attached.
We have run through some of the most popular markets out there that will cater to the needs of novices and more seasoned bettors.
Match/Main Bets
Moneyline (Head to Head): The easiest way to bet on tennis is a straight-up moneyline bet (often referred to as a head-to-head bet in tennis). Your job is to pick the winner of a match, with the odds based on how likely one player is to defeat another. Read our moneyline betting guide to learn more.
Outright: This is another easy type of bet, similar to a moneyline, however in a futures, or outright bet, you bet on the individual tennis player to win the entire tournament. Check out our outright betting guide for more information.
Correct score: In tennis, you can bet on the correct score of a match. So, if you think Nadal will defeat Djokovic two sets to nil in an upcoming ATP event, you can bet on 2-0 being the correct score for the encounter.
Over/Under (Total games): Another popular tennis bet is to wager on how many games you think will be played in a match. For instance, if Sakkari and Gauff are head-to-head in a 3-set match, the totals line might be set at 22.5 games. Your job is to bet whether more or fewer games than the totals line will be played, more commonly referred to as the over/under , respectively.
Handicap: Known as the point spread in other sports, a handicap bet is a great way of levelling things up on your betting slip. The favourite is given a deficit to overcome, while the underdog gets a headstart. A headstart of 3.5 games might be given to the underdog, meaning that the favourite you’re betting on would need to win the set by at least 4 games to cover the spread and win your bet.
Double result (1st set/match): It’s also possible to place a double bet on a tennis match, which sees you back the same player to win the first set and then the match outright. This is an effective way of building value into your betting slip.
Set Bets
X set winner (pick the winner of specific sets): How many times have you seen a game of tennis go back and forth on the court? A fun bet is to wager which player you think will win each respective set in a match instead of merely picking an outright winner.
X set total games (Over/Under): Another popular set bet in tennis is predicting how many games will be played in the set. Fancy a whitewash of 6-0 to the defending champion? Or do you think it will be a tight 6-4 first set? The line might be set at 8.5, and your job is to predict whether more or fewer games will be played in the set.
1st set correct score: The first set in a tennis match is often unpredictable, but it provides a great opportunity to predict the correct score between two players. Be it 6-2 or 5-7, you can wager the expected outcome of the first set to add value to your tennis betting slip.
Exact sets: Will the matchup go the distance, or will one player wrap things up without reply? Bet on the exact sets of a particular tennis match as another way of enhancing your tournament betting slip.
