What is La Liga?
The Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, better known simply as La Liga, is the premier league of Spanish soccer, where the best Spanish teams play each season. Every week, the top twenty clubs in the country play against one another every week as they compete for the right to be crowned champions at the end of the season.
Over the years, it’s been regarded as one of the strongest leagues in Europe, with La Liga clubs shining in continental and international competitions. In fact, teams competing in La Liga have the record for the most Champions League wins, most UEFA Europa League wins, and most FIFA Club World Cup titles.
Over the years, many of the world’s best players have played in La Liga, including greats such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Ballon d’Or, the prestigious award given to the best player in the world, has been won the most times by players in La Liga.
History of La Liga
The national Spanish professional soccer league was first proposed in 1928. However, disagreements over which teams should take part resulted in a split between two leagues which remained unfinished. Eventually, the Royal Spanish Football Federation agreed on ten teams to take part in the inaugural season of the national league.
At the time, the Copa del Rey was the main competition in Spanish soccer, and the previous winners and runners-up of this cup were invited to play in the first season of La Liga, which started as the Primera Division in 1929. A final team was chosen through a special tournament.
In total, the first season featured ten teams:
Arenas
Athletic Bilbao
Atlético Madrid
Español
Europa
Barcelona
Racing Santander
Real Madrid
Real Unión
Only three of the ten founding clubs have never been relegated from the top division. These are Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletic Club.
Barcelona won the inaugural season, although the 1930s saw Athletic Bilbao dominate with four titles. In the years that followed, Atlético Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona would all have periods of success, though Real Madrid established their superiority from the 50s through to the 80s.
Over the years, more teams were founded and added to La Liga as the Spanish football leagues grew. Since its inception, 62 teams have competed in La Liga, with 9 teams crowned as champions.
Today, La Liga is the top of the five levels of professional soccer in Spain and is contested between 20 teams each season. Barcelona and Real Madrid have had something of a duopoly, but it’s still a competitive league, and other teams, such as Atlético Madrid, have challenged and won titles in recent years.
Format & Schedule of the 2025-26 La Liga
La Liga features twenty teams that all play one another in home and away fixtures. This round-robin format means that every club plays 38 games throughout the season, making 380 games in total.
Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. These points are used to rank the teams in a table. At the end of the season, the top team is crowned the champions. Meanwhile, the bottom three teams are relegated to the Segunda Division, while the three top teams from the Segunda are promoted.
Aside from winning the league, teams are competing to survive and for a chance to play in European competitions. The top 4 teams in La Liga will get to join the league phase of the elite UEFA Champions League the following season, while the 5th-placed team will qualify for the Europa League league phase. Finally, the 6th-placed team will qualify for the play-off round of the Conference League.

Create an account at Stake and open the wallet to make a deposit.
Store your funds safely in the vault, then search for a team or use the menu to find Soccer > Spain > La Liga.
Look through the live and upcoming soccer matches, and choose one to see the full range of markets.
Add any of the betting options to your bet slip and then enter your stake to confirm.
Check back to see if your bet is a winner and cash out any winnings.
There are lots of different ways to bet on soccer at Stake. La Liga matches feature a variety of bet types to choose from. Some of the most popular options include:
1x2 – Similar to a three-way moneyline bet, the 1x2 betting market is a prediction of either the home team win, draw or away team win.
Draw no bet – This time, you simply pick either side to win. In the event of a draw, your stake is returned.
Asian total – Bet on the total goals scored in the game or by either team, over or under a specific number. Quarter goal totals are available, giving you half your stake back if it doesn’t hit.
Asian handicap – This adds a goal margin to both teams. The team must overcome or avoid losing by the handicap for your bet to win.
Double chance – A bet on two different outcomes of the match. For example, the home team to win or a draw.
First goal – Which team do you predict will score the first goal of the match?
Correct score – Predict the final score at the end of the match.
Both teams to score – Bet on whether or not you think both teams will score during the match.
Outright – Bet on the final outcome of the season, including the title odds, which teams will be relegated and the winner of the Pichichi trophy for top goal scorer. You can also find outright World Cup betting odds.
Parlay – if you want to increase your odds and potential payout, you can add multiple bets into one. This includes same-game multi bets. With this form of betting, each selection you include in the bet must win.
How to Live Stream Soccer & Live Betting Markets

What’s more, we even offer live streams. You can enjoy live soccer action at Stake as it happens, helping you choose your bets and giving you more information on what’s happening on the pitch. La Liga Odds & Payouts
La Liga odds work exactly the same as on any other sport at Stake. You can change the odds between decimal, fractional, or American, depending on which you prefer.
The odds will affect your payout, so before you make your picks, you should understand how betting odds work. Here are some examples of soccer odds to illustrate:
Decimal Odds
The decimal odds are the simplest to understand. The bigger the number, the greater the odds and the larger the potential payout. For example, in a match of Real Madrid to win against Osasuna, Real are heavy favourites at 1.47 to win, while Osasuna are 7.00, and the draw is 4.8.
To calculate your total payout, simply multiply the odds by your stake. So if you bet $10 on Real Madrid and they win, you get back $14.70 ($10 stake and $4.70 profit).
Fractional Odds
For fractional odds, you simply multiply your stake by the numerator (the top number of the fraction) before dividing the result by the denominator (the bottom number of the fraction). This gives you the profit you’ll make from winning the bet. Osasuna are 6/1 underdogs, so you’d win $60 if you bet $10 on Osasuna and they won the match.
American Odds
Now, let’s look at the same odds in the American odds format. For these, outcomes that have a 50% probability or higher are denoted with a - sign, while outcomes with lower than 50% probability use a + sign.
The odds themselves tell you either the amount you’d need to bet to make $100 in profit or the total profit you’d make betting $100. Real Madrid to win the match has odds of -213. This means that to win $100, you’d need to bet $213. The odds for Osasuna to win are +600, which means you’d win $600 if you bet $100.
La Liga Betting Tips, Predictions & Strategies
If you want to succeed when betting on sports, you need to have an understanding of the game and use the right strategies. Every season brings new drama and storylines, with star players emerging, coaches facing the sack, and teams battling to win the title or just survive. You can find expert predictions and tips for soccer betting at Stake, including our La Liga predictions and 2026 FIFA World Cup picks.
While things might be different each season, always consider these betting strategies to give yourself the best odds when betting on La Liga.
Form and Statistics
There are so many different statistics available on La Liga games, including recent form, head-to-head records, and expected goals. You should always pay attention to these when deciding how to bet. Form shows whether a team is getting results, but it doesn’t always tell the whole story.
Sometimes, luck is a big factor when betting on soccer, so it makes sense to check the underlying statistics too. If a team is over-performing their expected goals, you might consider betting against them as their luck will eventually run out. Last season, La Liga matches saw an average of 2.62 goals scored per game, and the home side won 44% of the time.
Team News and Fixtures
While soccer is a team sport, even the best teams will still rely on star players to make a difference. La Liga has often featured some of the world’s best players, and a team losing a star performer can be a major blow. Check the team news before you bet to see if any key players are injured.
You should also consider the fixture list, and playing too many games in a short space of time results in fatigue, injuries, and poor form. If a team has recently played in a midweek European game, they might struggle on the weekend, even if they’re the favourite to win.
Markets and Live Betting
While Stake offers a huge variety of markets to choose from, you should be selective about which you bet on. It’s a good idea to pick one area that you research well before the game, giving you the best chances of success. Check our betting previews for more information on the best markets to choose.
Don’t forget to take advantage of live betting too, as the live stats will help you make more informed betting decisions when choosing your betting lines and hopefully improve your success rate too.
